What Services Can an Auto Mechanic Provide for Me?

Many Americans are mystified, when it comes to automobile upkeep and repairs. Yet, we would be lost without our vehicles. According to the United States Transportation Department, the average American household has 1.9 cars and 1.8 drivers. So what do we do when something goes wrong with our car or truck? How do we get to work? To the grocery store? Most Americans, unless they have received some training in automobile care, turn to specialized mechanics to resolve their issues. These men and women are experts in the field of automotives and can assist the average American in the following areas:
Basic maintenance

For some, the simple procedures of checking the oil or polishing the vehicle may be too difficult, or time-consuming. Auto mechanics can help owners with the easiest tasks of car maintenance. Though not all mechanics offer these services, many will advertise a car wash, on top of a regular “check-up.” This keeps your car looking beautiful and may actually help prevent damages, by keeping dirt and grime out of the car parts.
Preventative maintenance

This form of upkeep, depending on your geographic location, should be performed at least twice per year. These measures can keep bad things from happening to your vehicle. Regular oil changes keep your engine running smoothly. Tire rotations prevent excessive wear and tear and a loss of tire tread. Brake pads should be replaced to ensure their proper function. If you live in a particularly hot or cold area, your vehicle should be able to handle the climate. The heating and air conditioning should be checked regularly and often it is necessary to “winterize” the car. This may require a special type of tire to give the vehicle additional grip in icy conditions.

Diagnosis

Oftentimes, drivers will realize that there is a problem with their car. Perhaps it emits a strange smell or sound. These oddities should be recorded, just as you would record your symptoms for a doctor. Special note should be taken if anything seems out of place. If you notice a scraping sound when you stop, your brake pads may need to be replaced. If you smell a sweet, sticky scent, your car may be leaking anti-freeze. Whatever the concern, your auto mechanic should be able to recognize a problem, based on your description of the symptoms, and make an accurate diagnosis.

Repairs

After a problem has been diagnosed, the mechanic will fix it in the shop. It is necessary for your safety to listen to the recommendations of the mechanic. He or she will make a quick evaluation and provide the owner with a rough estimate of the cost. The car may need to be kept overnight, or for longer, depending on the severity of the problem. The mechanic will use his or her expertise to completely correct the problem. You will be charged for this expertise, as well as any necessary parts for the repair.

If you are confused any time you look under the hood of your car or truck, do not despair. A trained auto mechanic is here to help!
